Dorothy and John Howard were honoured by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (M.D.A.) of Western Australia recently, for forty years of service to the community. They were both awarded life membership in the association recognizing four decades of service to individuals with muscular dystrophy.
Their names will be placed on the life membership honour board displayed at the Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute, located at the QE II Medical Centre in Perth.
Dorothy’s desire to support those with muscular dystrophy comes from having three brothers, one grandson and one nephew die from the disease.
In addition to assisting the M.D.A. with various fund-raising efforts over the years, Dorothy has written two books of poetry. All proceeds from sales of these books go to the M.D.A. of Western Australia.
The Howards are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints.
“Dorothy started her support in 1969,” according to the Church’s director of public affairs in Perth’s Warwick Stake (similar to a diocese). “And her husband John has been by her side all the way, also contributing his time and talents.”
The Church’s Newsroom website published an article earlier this month titled ‘Reaching Out Around the World.’ According to the article: “Latter-day Saints believe that giving service to others is a lifestyle based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, who ‘went about doing good.’”
In September 2008 Newsroom published ‘Pure Religion,’ a commentary outlining some of the principles underpinning the Latter-day Saints’ doctrinal and practical approach to serving others.
